What is wedding insurance - and why couples planning their special event might need it?

Wedding Insurance - Fan July 17 Update 5

So you've just got engaged! First of all, many congratulations!

As you begin to start planning for the big day, you may wonder if you need wedding insurance or, indeed, what wedding insurance is. Simply put, you can get wedding insurance to cover your deposits or other pre-payments for the big day, and then cover for damage (say, to wedding outfits or gifts), bankruptcy of a supplier or in certain cases, if you need to reschedule or cancel a wedding. Many people are not aware this kind of insurance exists.

Your wedding is perhaps the biggest event that you will plan in your life. Of course, everyone hopes nothing goes wrong, but there are many moving parts as the big day approaches…. Wedding insurance can offer you cover against many eventualities. Emerald in particular can provide worldwide wedding insurance to support you from as little as £49. Given the time and money you have and will spend, shouldn’t you think about some sort of protection?

Here are some examples where wedding insurance could help protect you...

Two months away from the big day, you or your partner is made redundant and, as a result, are unable to pay the remaining balance on the wedding.

This is sad news, but unfortunately a common reason why many weddings are postponed. It might not even be you or your partner but a close relative who has generously agreed to help pay the cost of the event.

Comprehensive wedding insurance should provide cover for redundancy.

A key family member falls ill a few days before the ceremony and it becomes inappropriate to go ahead as planned.

It may be the case that the day just would not be the same if a close relative is no longer able to attend because of unexpected sickness, injury or death. In that unfortunate event, a comprehensive insurance policy should give the wedding party the option to cancel and/or rearrange. In such a case, irrecoverable expenses may be reimbursed up to the limits in your policy. You should make sure that your policy limits cover up to the potential exposure, and before cancelling ring your insurer to be certain that you are covered in the particular case – a severe head cold is unlikely to qualify!

The staff at the hotel have been amazing; you couldn’t have asked for more. But while they were preparing for the wedding breakfast they drop your stunning wedding cake.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing anybody can do about this now; there isn’t enough time to bake another cake and scooping it off the floor just won’t do.

A wedding insurance policy should cover you for the loss of the now smushed cake. It won’t replace the cake, but hopefully the cash back will help for future expenses. At least the staff are on hand to tidy up...

Disaster strikes and that nice hotel you’ve booked for your wedding has caught fire. The venue is gutted, as are you. What do you do?

First, always call your claims centre and tell them what’s happened.

Depending on the level of cover you take, with a comprehensive policy you may be covered for all your irrecoverable expenses including prepayments for the venue, the damaged gifts, the cake and your stylish attire.

A wedding supplier turns you and your spouse down for any wedding service for a reason that is a breach of the Equalities Act (you are a same sex couple, one of you is disabled etc.)

This is a big one - it doesn't happen too often but it does happen, and it's a body blow to suffer discrimination when you are planning your own wedding.

Emerald’s wedding cover (if we do blow our own horn) is the first in the UK to protect you from this ugly eventuality. If, in breach of the Equalities Act, a supplier decides not to uphold their contractual obligations or even not to contract with you at all, we may reimburse your legal fees in bringing about a civil claim in the courts against that supplier. With Emerald, you’re covered!

For the price of some your wedding invitations, both you and your wedding can be covered. See more about our comprehensive wedding policy here.
