Single Supplements Scrapped in Favour of the Solo Traveller

By EmeraldLife

A recent report published by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has highlighted an increasing number of people are choosing to travel alone.

The report confirmed that as many as 1 in 6 people decided that solo travel was best suited to them. The top reasons for doing so might surprise you:

Solo travel allows the traveller to be in complete control of the itinerary.

76% of the people surveyed said that solo holidays allowed them the freedom to plan their activities for the week without considering the requirements of a companion. Whether you like to explore the hidden treasures of foreign lands, or prefer to spend the entire week on a sun lounger with a good book, solo travel puts the ball firmly in your court.

Going on holiday alone gives the traveler time to get away from the stresses and strains of every day routines.

We all love our family and friends but sometimes it is nice to take a break from the ‘norm’. Some 63% of people said that ‘taking some time out’ was the reason they chose to go on holiday alone. Not being answerable to anyone other than yourself for a few days can refresh and refocus the mind.

Being inspired to visit new destinations has encouraged individuals going on holiday alone.

Travelling to foreign lands has never been so accessible, with many travel agents offering a much wider choice of destination and activities.

Gone are the days when a solo traveler would only feel safe if they were to go on a guided solo holiday with a rigid itinerary. With this in mind, it is no wonder that 37% of solo holidays are purchased for this reason.

So what does this all mean for the solo traveller?

Well, the great news is that ABTA’s publication has encouraged some travel agents  to scrap the single supplement charges.

So if you’re considering taking a break alone, there’s never been a more cost effective time to take the plunge!

Whether you're travelling alone or with friends. Emerald Life offers great value travel insurance to cover your trip.

Historically, solo travellers were discouraged from travelling alone as travelling with a companion was much more cost effective.
