A few brands now offer home insurance with free gift as an incentive to buy their policy. That seems to be especially popular with comparison sites.
But is home insurance with a free gift really the right policy for you and could it cost more than the “free” gift is worth?
A good free gift could be better cover rather than a cuddly toy. At Emerald Life we offer legal expenses cover free with your policy. This is a high quality insurance products normally sold as an add-on by most insurers but we pay for it out of our own commission to give our customers better cover.
"Absolutely outstanding service and quote from Morgan. This man responded to my emails at 11pm ahead of an urgent freehold deadline the next day. I wouldn’t normally recommend insurance companies but you’ve really gone above and beyond to deliver what I needed. Very pleased."

At Emerald Life we focus on delivering our customers value. We’re not even on a lot of comparison sites so we can pass on the savings to our customers.
Similarly, we don’t offer long term payment plans as the costs involved in this would also result in higher premiums.
Simple measures like these are how we aim to deliver you excellent value. So if you do still want a gift – that’s not free home emergency cover – then we may have saved you enough money to buy your own.
What Is Legal Expenses Cover?
Another home insurance free gift that we believe is a very generous offer is our legal cover.
Home insurance legal cover can help with your legal costs in a wide variety of legal disputes. Covered events can include unfair dismissal at work, probate disputes, personal injury claims, social media defamation and much more.
An extra perk of this is a 24/7 legal helpline open 365 days a year. That means if you find yourself in a situation where you are considering legal action or may face legal action, you can get expert help on the phone.

Be Careful With Comparison Sites
Comparison sites are a very competitive marketplaces where large numbers of consumers go to find good value insurance.
However, there are a number of problems with finding insurance this way. Firstly, you are limited to the brands that are participating with the comparison site and so you can easily miss out on other deals.
As these sites are quite expensive to be featured on, a lot of insurers may have different pricing for customers who come from a comparison site.
Some insurers reserve their best deals for potential customers who come direct.
As comparison sites are largely price-driven, it is easy to miss out on extra product features. The cheapest results may actually come with strings attached. For instance, the excess you pay towards any claims could be very high.
What does that mean? You might save £50 on your home insurance premium by going for an option that has a £1000 excess rather than a £500 excess. But that means if you have to claim the claim will cost you £500 more than if you had gone for the slightly more expensive policy.
Then you also need to check the exclusions to check your policy will pay out in a wide variety of situations.
